Whether your rug is polyester, nylon, polypropylene/olefin, acrylic, wool, silk, cotton, jute or sisal, we can help. Grossbusters cleans in Olympia, Lacey, Yelm, and Dupont WA and surrounding areas.

1) We'll determine the rug's fabric type. This is an critical step because certain cleaning chemicals can harm delicate, natural rugs.

2) We'll carefully inspect the rug and look for snags, rips, loose threads, and stains which must be taken care of separately from the cleaning process. If your rug has odors or stains from pet urine, please see our Pet Stain & Odor Removal page for more information on how we'll address those.

3) The rug is now vacuumed. Certain delicate rugs can't be vacuumed with a standard vacuum cleaner and must only be shaken out to remove pet hair, sand, and general soil.

4) We'll apply a fiber-safe cleaner to the rug.

5) Using one or more scrubbing tools, we gently agitate the cleaner into the rug.

6) After a few minutes of dwell time, the soil has had a chance to soften and release from the rug fibers.

7) Once the cleaning agents have had sufficient dwell time, we'll thoroughly clean the rug using one or more of the following methods: steam cleaning (hot water extraction), encapsulation cleaning, bonnet cleaning, and/or shampooing.

8) We'll treat any remaining stubborn spots with fabric-appropriate spot removers.

9) We'll inspect the rug once more to make sure it's as clean as possible.

10) If applicable, we'll apply one or more post-treatments to the rug including stain protector, deodorizer, or sanitizer. Please note that some natural rugs are incompatible with certain post-treatments.

11) We'll set up the rug for drying. Depending on the size, location and ambient temperature, this may include the use of fans or placement of the rug near a heat source.

Area Rug Cleaning FAQs (Olympia, Lacey, Yelm & DuPont WA):

How often should area rugs be professionally cleaned?

For most households, we recommend professional area rug cleaning every 12–18 months. Homes with pets, children, allergies, frequent cooking, or high foot traffic may benefit from cleaning every 6–12 months. Regular professional cleaning removes abrasive grit that causes premature wear and helps rugs last significantly longer.

Can you clean rugs in my home, or do they need to be picked up?

Grossbusters provides in-home cleaning of your area rugs. In rare instances (such as in the case of extremely delicate rugs, or rugs with severe pet urine contamination), off-site cleaning of your rugs may be recommended. Some delicate rugs including wool, silk, cotton, jute, and hand-woven rugs require off-site cleaning for proper dust removal, controlled drying, and color safety. We evaluate each rug individually and recommend the safest method.

Is professional rug cleaning safe for antique or handmade rugs?

Yes, when done correctly. Antique, handmade, and specialty rugs require fiber-specific cleaning methods, gentle agitation, and controlled moisture. That’s why we pre-inspect every rug and tailor the process to its construction, dyes, soil level, and condition.

Do you remove pet odors and urine from area rugs?

We can often significantly reduce pet odors, depending on how deeply contamination has penetrated the rug and backing. Urine that reaches the foundation or padding requires specialized treatment, and in severe cases, full immersion cleaning is recommended. Please note that we cannot guarantee 100% odor removal from area rugs.

How long will my area rug take to dry after cleaning?

Dry time typically takes 1-6 hours depending on fiber thickness, soil level, fiber type, and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. In some extreme cases, rugs may take longer to dry.

Wool Rugs

Pros:

  • Naturally stain-resistant

  • Durable and long-lasting

  • Excellent insulation and comfort

Cons:

  • Sensitive to improper detergents

  • Can shrink or bleed dyes if mishandled

Cleaning Notes:
Wool rugs require pH-balanced solutions and controlled moisture. Harsh cleaners or over-wetting can permanently damage fibers.

Polypropylene / Olefin Rugs

Pros:

  • Affordable

  • Colorfast

  • Moisture-resistant

Cons:

  • Attracts oily soils

  • Fibers crush more easily

Cleaning Notes:
Olefin rugs clean well when properly flushed and rinsed, but they require thorough soil removal to prevent rapid re-soiling.

Polyester Rugs

Pros:

  • Soft feel

  • Bright colors

  • Good stain resistance

Cons:

  • Oil-based soils cling to fibers

  • Can show wear faster than nylon

Cleaning Notes:
Proper pre-treatment and extraction are key to restoring appearance and softness.

Nylon Rugs

Pros:

  • Extremely durable

  • Resilient fibers

  • Great for high-traffic areas

Cons:

  • Can absorb dyes if mishandled

  • Requires proper rinsing

Cleaning Notes:
Nylon responds very well to professional cleaning when residues are fully removed. Nylon is an excellent choice for an area rug!

Acrylic Rugs

Pros:

  • Wool-like appearance

  • Resistant to mildew and moths

Cons:

  • Less durable

  • Can fuzz or pill

Cleaning Notes:
Gentle cleaning methods help preserve texture and prevent fiber distortion.

Cotton Rugs

Pros:

  • Lightweight

  • Breathable

  • Often reversible

Cons:

  • Shrinks easily

  • Colors may bleed

Cleaning Notes:
Cotton rugs require careful water control and drying to avoid distortion and dye migration.

Jute & Sisal Rugs

Pros:

  • Natural, earthy appearance

  • Eco-friendly

Cons:

  • Extremely moisture-sensitive

  • Stains easily

  • Limited cleaning options

Cleaning Notes:
These rugs generally require zero-moisture or dry cleaning techniques. Water exposure can cause browning, stiffness, and fiber breakdown.

Silk Rugs

Pros:

  • Luxurious sheen

  • Very soft

Cons:

  • Extremely delicate

  • Poor stain resistance

Cleaning Notes:
Silk rugs should only be cleaned by professionals experienced with fine fibers. Improper cleaning can permanently dull or weaken silk.
